Are we Marxists? Probably not, but there are some similarities.
America
No Homer, Shakspere, Voltaire
No Kings, palaces, or courts,
No armies on the land, nor navies on the sea,
But countless living equal men,
Average, free
In terms of Marxism, I thought this poem was a very good example. First of all, the name title was the first thing that stood out to me. When you think of Marxism, you don't exactly think of America first. However, the 4th and 5th stanzas of the poem talk about things that could be thought of as Marxism. America has done away with all of the kings and palaces, allowing a fair world of men with equal rights. But not just to a few, he mentions 'countless living equal men'. This vivid imagery is what we American's try to base our freedom off of, although Marxism follows a very similar idea of equal men living and working together to help each other out. Are we Marxist? Probably not, but I think this poem gives a little insight towards some of the common resemblances.
